Key U.S. Senators Renew Call For Bakhtiyar Hajiyev’s Immediate Release
Washington D.C./22.02.23/Turan: Key U.S. senators on Tuesday, once again. urged Azerbaijan to release leading activist Bakhtiyar Hajiyev immediately, TURAN's Washington correspondent reports.
"I remain concerned about the ongoing detention of activist Bakhtiyar Hajiyev, who is facing politically-motivated charges, amid troubling reports of his health rapidly deteriorating," Senator Dick Durbin, the second-highest-ranking Democrat in the Senate, noted.
"I urge the Government of Azerbaijan to release him immediately on health & humanitarian grounds.," Durbin said in a tweet.
Senator Ben Cardin, co-chair of the Helsinki Commission, also called on the Azerbaijani government to immediately release Bakhtiyar Hajiyev on health and humanitarian grounds.
“The ongoing detention of civic activist Bakhtiyar Hajiyev in Azerbaijan must end,” Cardin noted in a separate tweet.
“Mr. Hajiyev’s health is deteriorating rapidly, and we appeal to the Government of Azerbaijan to release him immediately on health and humanitarian grounds,” he added.
Hajiyev was arrested on Dec 9 for alleged “hooliganism” and “disrespect for court”, claims that he strongly rejects and started a hunger strike.

"Therefore, this question cannot be answered with a simple 'yes'," she said.
