On February 18, within the framework of the Munich Security Conference “Climbing mountains?” a plenary session was held on the topic “Strengthening security in the South Caucasus”. Within the framework of the conference, debates were held between the leaders of the three countries of the South Caucasus. The President of Azerbaijan, the Prime Ministers of Georgia and Armenia spoke at the meeting.

Within the framework of the conference, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev held a joint meeting with Secretary of State of the United States of America Anthony Blinken and Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan.

By the way, interesting events related to the South Caucasus region took place within the framework of this conference. There were messages related to Iran and Russia.

Political commentator Rauf Mirgadirov comments on the results of the Munich conference in the "Difficult Question" program.

According to him, at the Munich meeting, the West finally recognized the fallacy of its policy towards Russia, pursued after the collapse of the USSR. He also recalled that on March 5, 1946, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, in his speech delivered at Westminster College in the USA, known as the Fulton speech, first voiced such an expression as the "Iron Curtain".

“Thus, Churchill stated the fact that Russia, together with its satellites, is fenced off from the world by this“ iron curtain ”. Today we are witnessing quite different picture. Today the West is shielding itself and its allies from Russia with the Iron Curtain,” the observer noted.

According to the journalist, Vladimir Putin, who spoke after this conference, did not say anything new in essence, but touched upon a very important issue.

“He announced that Russia had suspended its participation in the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START or START-3), the last of the remaining major agreements between the two countries on nuclear weapons. True, Putin stressed that this is not yet a way out of the treaty. However, the suspension of participation in the treaty means that Russia can increase the number of nuclear warheads and their delivery vehicles (intercontinental missiles), Mirkadyrov explained.

He also added that a few hours after the announcement of Putin's suspension of Russia's participation in START-3, Biden spoke in Warsaw.

“The speech of the head of the White House was not a direct response to Putin’s speech, Biden rather outlined a broader picture of the confrontation between democracies and authoritarian regimes and made it clear that the United States did not intend to attack Russia. Our goal is only to protect the world from Russian aggression,” Mirkadyrov said.
