An additional expert examination has been appointed in the case of Bakhtiyar Hajiyev; it may mean an extension of the period of arrest
Baku/22.02.23/Turan: On February 22, lawyers Agyl Layij, Fahraddin Mehdiyev, Shahla Humbatova, and Rovshan Rahimli visited activist Bakhtiyar Hajiyev at the medical institution of the Penitentiary Service, who has been on a hunger strike for 45 days.
"The health of Bakhtiyar is dangerous. His tongue turned green. Doctors say that this is the result of hunger and processes in the gallbladder," Agyl Laij told Turan.
Today the investigator also came to the medical institution and ordered an additional examination. “This is a pretext for an artificial increase in the term of imprisonment,” said a lawyer Elchin Sadigov.
Bakhtiyar's preliminary detention ends on February 28, and a new examination will take time. Therefore, we must expect a new court session, which will extend the term of arrest, since formally the investigation has not been completed, because it is necessary to wait for the conclusion of the examination, Elchin Sadigov believes.
Bakhtiyar Hajiyev has been on a hunger strike for 45 days, of which he has been on a dry hunger strike for 5 days. The human rights activist demands to release him and all political prisoners from prison.
“He cannot stand, he is constantly dizzy, it is difficult for him to speak. His weight dropped from 84 to 67.7 kg. , blood pressure - 85/60, blood sugar level dropped to 3.2%, - said lawyer Rovshan Rahimli.
The activist, who was in custody in the Baku Detention Facility No. 1, was transferred to a medical institution of the Penitentiary Service on February 11 due to a sharp deterioration in his health.
Bakhtiyar Hajiyev was arrested on December 9 last year on charges of hooliganism and contempt of court. On the same day, the Khatai District Court arrested him for 1 month and 20 days.
On December 15, Hajiyev went on a hunger strike demanding his release. He ended his hunger strike on December 28 after persistent calls from members of the public and family members. But on January 9, after the Court of Appeal denied his release from custody, he resumed his hunger strike, which continues to this day.
On January 21, the court extended Hajiyev's term of imprisonment for another month.
The courts denied numerous requests by lawyers for Hajiyev's house arrest or his release on bail pending the start of the trial. ---03B---
