Lavrov Pleased with Reception in Baku
Baku / 20.11.17 / Turan: The next meeting of the commission for military-technical cooperation between Russia and Azerbaijan will be held in December, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at a meeting with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov on Monday.
According to Lavrov, the interaction between the two countries "plays an important role in ensuring security in Transcaucasia and the Caspian region."
"Yesterday there was a meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, and I sincerely appreciate the attention he pays to the cooperation between our foreign ministries," Lavrov said.
"This is an important component of our multifaceted ties, which encompass both the economy and the trade. The intergovernmental commission and the military-technical cooperation work actively. In December, the regular meeting on military-technical cooperation will be held in Baku," Interfax quotes Lavrov as saying.
He also drew attention to the successful development of cooperation between the Security Councils of the two countries. "Our relations are gaining momentum, multibillion-dollar turnover, which is very important, and a transport component has appeared," he said.
Lavrov also made a speech in the Diplomatic Academy of Azerbaijan, where he touched upon the issues of the Karabakh settlement.
In his opinion, despite the fact that the relations between Russia and the United States are in a deadlock, this does not affect the work of the two countries within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group on the Karabakh settlement.
"Of course, many areas of relations (Russia and the US) are in a deadlock, but cooperation on the Karabakh settlement has not suffered from what is happening in our bilateral affairs," Lavrov said.
He noted that the co-chairmen of the Minsk Group - Russia, the United States and France - are taking a unified position on this issue. -06D--

An indictment has been announced in the Baku Serious Crimes Court at the trial of activist Ilhamiz Guliyev. The activist rejected the accusations of drug trafficking and claimed that the criminal case was falsified. At the beginning of the trial, Guliyev petitioned to present to the court the mobile phone seized from him during his detention. He said that photos of operatives who followed him and later participated in the arrest got on the phone. However, the court left the petition without consideration.
