Media representatives once again call for open debates over the media law project
Baku / 09.07.21/Turan: Questions arising from the development of the law on media, as well as the relations between the media, society and state were in the focus of attention on Thursday at the meeting of lawyer in freedom of expression Alesker Mamedli, director of Turan News Agency Mehman Aliyev with the executive director of the Media Development Agency Ahmed Ismailov.
Ismailov specified conditions that make it necessary to update the law on mass media, goals and objectives of the new law mainly aimed at regulating the chaotic state in the information sphere, eliminating abuses, improving the media atmosphere and ensuring the stability of media structures.
It should be acknowledged that Mammadli and Aliyev are not familiar with the project, so the debates were of general nature focus on addressing deep economic and professional crisis. The conversation also touched upon the prospects of the development of the information community.
Media experts expressed their concern about the closed nature of debates over the draft law in terms where the state policy is directed to suppressing freedom of speech. Therefore, they called for open public debates.
In turn, Ismailov noted that after closed debates the bill will be submitted to the parliament, and then to the public.
It has to be krept in mind that the proposed amendments to the legislation provide for restrictions and control over the media sphere which causes public concern.--0--
