Meeting of I.Aliyev with the Secretary General of the International Civil Defense Organization
Baku/18.05.23/Turan: On May 18, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev received the Secretary General of the International Civil Defense Organization Nzhupuo Yap Mariata, who is on a visit to Azerbaijan.
During the meeting, Aliyev noted that Mariatu's visit to Azerbaijan will contribute to further cooperation between Azerbaijan and the International Civil Defense Organization, the website of the head of state. Mariatu, for her part, noted that the assistance provided by Azerbaijan during the earthquake in Turkey was highly appreciated by the organization headed by her. In this regard, President Aliyev informed the guest about the construction by Azerbaijan of 1,000 houses in Kahramanmarash for earthquake victims.
Mariatu stressed that Azerbaijan, as a member of the International Civil Defense Organization since 1993, has been one of the countries that actively participates in initiatives aimed at promoting issues related to civil defense and promotes cooperation within the framework of capacity-building programs in this area.
The President of Azerbaijan drew the guest's attention to the fact that during the Patriotic War of 2020, Armenians launched ballistic missiles at the civilian population of Azerbaijan, which caused the death of civilians. Aliyev also informed the guest about the large-scale restoration work carried out in the territories liberated from occupation. The parties exchanged views on climate change. ---06B---

According to the Turkish newspaper Sabah, officials from the Istanbul Prosecutor's Office's Anti-Smuggling Unit have detained an Azerbaijani citizen with a large shipment of gold. The detention took place near the Vadi İstanbul shopping center in the Sarıyer district, where a taxi was stopped. During the search, 70 kg of gold was found. The Azerbaijani citizen in the vehicle claimed ownership of the cargo and also stated that he was a diplomat. The investigation by the prosecutor's office is ongoing, reports Sabah newspaper. The media outlet does not disclose the name of the "diplomat," only his initials – M.G.Ş. The Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs has declined to comment on the situation.
