Mi-17 helicopter crashed because of pilots' mistakes - General Prosecutor's Office
Baku/20.12.21/Turan: The crash of an Azerbaijani State Border Service's Mi-17 helicopter on November 30 led to the death of 14 people and wounded two others when the pilots made a mistake in helicopter's operation. The conclusion of the General Prosecutor's Office of Azerbaijan stated this at a briefing on December 20.
The investigation revealed that the pilots took into no account the wind direction and speed and made gross mistakes during the landing.
Thus, the crew made a decision to land when the helicopter's speed was 141 km/h, and the distance from the ground was 101 meters. During landing, ignoring the wind direction, there were significant changes in flight parameters, so the flight speed dropped to 0 and the altitude to 89 meters. The pilots tried to pull the helicopter out of crash condition, but failed.
The investigation revealed that the helicopter crashed due to the pilot's error at 17 minutes of flight.
Judging by the analysis of automatic registration system parameters, the crash was caused by premature lowering of the pitch-gas lever (common steering support of the leading wing) and miscalculated wind direction and power which caused sharp drop in engine rpm, speed and altitude that put the helicopter into uncontrollable condition.
The helicopter hit the ground with its tail end and then, under the action of the working propeller, it flew away from the surface and crashed into the ground again with its port side.
According to the initial forensic medical examination, the deaths of the victims were caused by traumatic shock from various injuries.
The helicopter's left door and windshield were smashed due to the impact. Four people were thrown from the helicopter, two of them died on the spot, two more received less severe injuries.
The investigation is ongoing. The public will be additionally informed about the progress of the investigation. The General Prosecutor's Office warned the media, as well as users of social networks, that spreading information about the helicopter crash from unofficial sources is inadmissible and entails liability under the law.-O6D-
