Municipal Elections to Take Place in Azerbaijan on January 29
In Azerbaijan, January 28 has been declared a day of silence ahead of the municipal elections. Voting for local self-government elections will take place on January 29. A total of 16,096 candidates are vying for 8,071 seats in 685 municipal councils.
Of these, 8,110 (50.4%) are candidates from the ruling "Yeni Azerbaijan" party, 388 (2.4%) represent 23 political parties, and 7,591 (47.1%) are independent candidates. A total of 5,961,987 registered voters will be able to participate in the elections. Polling stations will open at 8:00 AM, with 5,846 voting stations set up across the country. Voting will close at 7:00 PM.
The opposition party, the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party, has refused to participate in the elections, citing the lack of conditions for fair political competition.

According to official data, by 5:00 PM on January 29, 28.77% of voters participated in the municipal elections in Azerbaijan, Farid Orujov, a representative of the Central Election Commission reported. According to him, this amounts to 1,715,291 people.
