National Council Criticizes Donald Tusk and Thorbjorn Jagland for Congratulations to Ilham Aliyev
Baku / 16.04.18 / Turan: The National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF) expressed surprise and regret over the congratulations sent to Ilham Aliyev in connection with his re-election as President of Azerbaijan by President of the Council of the European Union Donald Tusk and Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland.
The international observation mission with the participation of representatives of the OSCE / ODIHR, OSCE PA and PACE in their preliminary assessment of the elections on April 11 stated that the elections were held in the conditions of restriction of political freedoms, the presence of a large number of political prisoners, the lack of conditions for fair competition, and the use of an administrative resource in favor of a candidate from power. In this regard, congratulations from the leaders of Europe look strange, the statement said.
The NCDF considered these congratulations to Aliyev as the desire of EU and CE officials to turn a blind eye to violations of the right of the Azerbaijani people to have free elections.
Such a position is incompatible with the democratic principles that guide the EU and the Council of Europe, the statement said.
The NCDF urged the international democratic community and states committed to democratic principles to respect the right of the Azerbaijani people to form their power through free elections, and not to justify electoral fraud. -06D-
