Nazim Beidemirli went on hunger strike in jail – lawyer
Baku/06.09.23/Turan: The ex-deputy, businessman Nazim Beidemirli, who is being held in jail, went on a hunger strike in protest against his unjustified arrest, his lawyer Agyl Laidj told Turan.
He noted that the last time he met with Beidemirli, he was told that on September 4 he would start a hunger strike in protest against his unjustified arrest on trumped-up charges.
"I received information that he has already started a hunger strike. I will be able to verify this information only during tomorrow's meeting with him," the lawyer said. The family of the ex-deputy is concerned about the announcement of a hunger strike.
"Nazim Beidemirli is scheduled to have a phone conversation with his family tomorrow. We are very concerned about their hunger strike," said the wife of entrepreneur Farida Beidermirli.
The Penitentiary Service, responding to Turan's request, said that the department had not received any appeals from Beydemirli about a hunger strike.
* N. Beidemirli was detained on July 4 by the Main Directorate for Combating Organized Crime of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Charges were brought against him under the Article 182.2.4 f the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan(Extortion by threats to seize a significant amount of property.) The next day, the court chose a preventive measure against him in the form of arrest for a period of 4 months. Beidemirli rejected the accusation, called it fabricated and devoid of legal grounds. According to the ex-deputy, the real reason for his arrest is his statements in connection with the protests of the residents of Seyudlu in Gedabey region against environmental pollution by a nearby gold ore processing plant.
On September 1, Beidemirli was charged under Article of the Criminal Code – 182.2.2 (extortion by threats, committed repeatedly.)
According to the lawyer, this accusation is based on the fact that Beidemirli allegedly extorted money from someone by threats in 1996 in the city of Lipetsk of the Russian Federation. The defender pointed out the groundlessness of the accusation both in fact and in connection with the expiration of the statute of limitations. Human rights activists recognized Beidemirli as a political prisoner. ----03B06---
