Nikol Pashinyan's Successor Found in Armenia
Baku / 03.12.20 / Turan: The Armenian opposition, represented by 17 parties demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, seems to have decided on its candidate for prime minister. According to Sputnik Armenia, he will be the ex-prime minister of the Armenian government (1990-91), ex-minister of defense (1992-93) Vazgen Manukyan.
Manukyan is expected to become the head of the interim government, which will hold early parliamentary elections, after which a new government will be formed.
On the evening of December 3, the opposition intends to start a general protest action across the country, blocking the streets demanding Nikol Pashinyan's resignation.
In the 90s, Manukyan founded the National Democratic Union party. In 1995-2007 he was elected as a member of parliament. In March 2009 he was appointed chairman of the Public Council. He remained in this position until December 2019. At the end of October 2020, during the fighting in Karabakh, he called on the government to resign and transfer power to the army.
Manukyan ran for President in 1996, competing with the current head of state, Levon Ter-Petrosyan. According to official data, Ter-Petrosyan won the elections, but Manukyan and his supporters contested the victory of the incumbent president. Mass protests took place in the country, resulting in riots near the parliament building. Despite the political crisis, Ter-Petrosyan managed to keep his post. -02D-
