November 17 - National Revival Day
Baku / 17.11.20 / Turan: November 17 is celebrated in Azerbaijan as the Day of National Revival. On this day in 1988, in Baku, on Lenin Square (now “Azadlig”), an uninterrupted rally began in protest against the inaction of the republican and union authorities in connection with the violation of Azerbaijan's sovereignty in Nagorno-Karabakh.
Hundreds of thousands of people for two weeks continuously demanded that Moscow put an end to the Armenian separatism in Karabakh.
On the night of December 4-5, the allied authorities carried out a punitive operation against the protesters, as a result dozens of people were injured, and one was killed.
Nevertheless, the rally marked the beginning of a powerful movement that culminated in the proclamation of Azerbaijan's independence in October 1991.
Since 1992, November 17 has been celebrated as National Revival Day. Until the end of 2006, this day was a public holiday. However, at the end of 2006, the parliament removed it from the list of non-working days.
Despite the great importance of this day, at the state level, it is not widely celebrated. — 06D-
