Olaf Scholz calls on Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia to join the EU
Baku/29.08.22/Turan: On Monday, the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, speaking in Prague supported the expansion of the European Union. "The countries of the Western Balkans, Ukraine, Moldova, and in the future Georgia should become part of the EU. This is in the interests of the European Union," he said.
"The question is being discussed where the division between a free Europe and neo-imperialism and autocracy will be," “Deutsche Welle” quotes Scholz.
The chancellor promised that Germany would continue to help Ukraine defend itself against Russian aggression and would send it modern air defense systems, radars and drones in the coming weeks. At the same time, Scholz noted that Germany should take on special responsibility for building up the potential of Ukraine in the field of air defense and artillery.
For the expansion of the European Union it is necessary to take drastic steps and reform the decision-making system. In particular, Scholz proposed to abolish the principle of unanimous decision-making in the EU.
"I propose a gradual transition to majority voting on issues of common foreign policy and in other areas, such as tax policy," “Reuters” quoted Scholz.
Ukraine and Moldova became candidates for the EU on June 23, 2022. Georgia did not receive such a status due to the delay in reforms. --02D--
