Operation "Shield" in areas bordering Russia
Baku/19.06.23/Turan: Complex search and preventive measures under the code name "Border Shield" started in the border regions between Azerbaijan and Russia.
The activities are conducted in accordance with the agreement between the Interior Ministries of the two countries.
Owing to the ongoing operations, police checkpoints have been established in Guba, Gusar, Khachmaz, Balakan, Zagatala, Gakh, Sheki, Oguz and Gabala regions.
The main purpose of the operations is to implement decisions taken on the cross-border cooperation, detection and neutralization of members of transnational organized criminal groups and terrorist organizations, conduct a complex of measures on revealing and closing of channels of financial and material resources, aimed at transporting weapons, drugs and committing other illegal acts.
The action will continue during the week and be completed on June 25. -06В-

On January 15, the Tbilisi Court of Appeals rejected the appeal of Afghan Sadigov, the founder of the Azel TV website, who had protested his extradition to Azerbaijan. Sadigov’s wife, Sevinj Sadigova, stated that this was the final judicial instance in Georgia making a decision on the case, Turan reported. On the other hand, lawyer Mariam Kvelashvili informed Turan that the defense would continue legal steps to prevent the extradition of Afghan Sadigov. According to his wife, Afghan has been on hunger strike for 117 days, and his health is critical.

On January 15, the Yasamal District Court rejected the motion to change the detention measure for Azer Gasymly, the director of the Institute of Political Management, his lawyer, Agyl Laidj, to Turan. "Azer Gasymly stated during the trial that the charges against him were fabricated and related to his socio-political activities," the lawyer said. An appeal will be filed against the court's decision.

Two people were arrested in Baku for plotting a terrorist attack against the local Jewish community, Israeli media reporting citing the Azerbaijani State Security Service. The target of the assassination was one of the leaders of the local Jewish community. During a special operation, a Georgian citizen, Agyl Aslanov, was detained. Aslanov had a previous conviction for drug smuggling.
