Peace Between Azerbaijan, Armenia 'Continues To Be Priority', State Department Says
Washington D.C./08.11.23/Turan: Peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia continues to be a priority for the United States, the State Department said on Tuesday, TURAN's Washington correspondent reports.
"Outside of everything that of course is going on in the world... peace between those two countries continues to be a priority for us, for Secretary Blinken" Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel told a daily briefing when responding to TURAN's questions on whether Washington was still planning to host another Karabakh summit, given that the sides had been engaged in carousel of forum shopping.
"It’s something that the [Sate] Department will continue to engage towards," Patel added without providing additional details.
Since 2022, the U.S. has hosted three rounds of meetings in Washington. In early September, two senior officials told TURAN's correspondent at the State Department that the U.S.-backed peace process had been "ongoing and fully alive," and that the parties were "prepared to return to Washington" to continue the dialogue.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan were due to meet with European Council President Charles Michel late last month, however the meeting has been cancelled for the second time in a month.
