People In Need awards the best human rights prize in 2012 to Intigam Aliyev
An international NGO «People In Need» Prize based in Prague awarded the Azerbaijani lawyer, head of the Society of legal education Intigam Aliyev as the best defender in the world in 2012.
He received the award for personal courage and exceptional determination in human rights activities. The awards ceremony will be held in Prague on March 4 at the opening of the International Documentary Film Festival on Human Rights.
Intigam Aliyev has acted as lawyer in more than 200 cases in the European Court of Human Rights. In 40 cases, the Strasbourg Court has restored the rights of his clients. This was the case with the violation of the right to vote, freedom of assembly, freedom of speech and the right to a fair trial.
In addition, Aliyev is providing legal assistance to the arrested of peaceful protesters. "Intigam Aliyev is an extremely courageous and consistent in protecting unfairly persecuted people in Azerbaijan", said Mark Svoboda, Director of the Center for Democracy and Human Rights People in Need. According to him, while appreciating Intigam Aliyev’s activity, the organization at the same time draws attention to the repression and violation of democracy in Azerbaijan.
Three weeks ago in Baku there was an action of protest against the persecution of the participants of popular unrest in the regions. Intigam Aliyev was arrested during this action.
For more than twenty years of his professional activity, Intigam Aliyev defended the rights of hundreds of people - journalists, bloggers, activists, human rights defenders.
The prize has been awarded since 1994. Its winners were the Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo (later awarded the Nobel Peace Prize), Belarusian human rights activist, Ales Beliatski, etc.-16/06D –
