Police prevented the action in support of Bayram Mammadov
Baku/11.04.19 / Turan: On Thursday a group of youth activists and journalists held a protest rally in front of the Gara Garayev metro station, demanding the release of activist Bayram Mammadov arrested for 30 days.
They held in their hands the slogans: "Freedom to political prisoners!", "Stop torture!" and chanted "Freedom to Bayram!"
A few minutes later, plainclothesmen and policemen blocked the participants of the action, broke off the slogans, detaining the most active participants. All of them were taken to the 25th police station of the Nizami district.
Bayram Mammadov and Giyas Ibrahimov were arrested in 2016 after they wrote political slogans on the monument to Heydar Aliyev. Both were sentenced to 10 years in prison on large-scale drug trafficking charges. Human rights organization Amnesty International recognized them as "prisoners of conscience."
Both were pardoned on March 16 of this year. After being released, B.Mammadov in the media and social networks sharply criticised the Azerbaijani authorities, and was soon arrested for 30 days on charges of insubordination to the police. Immediately after his arrest, he was tortured by police in the detention center.--0--
