Baku/30.03.23/Turan: Criminal case on facts of mass deportation, persecution and genocide of Azerbaijanis is opened in the Prosecutor's Office of Azerbaijan.

On the basis of the joint appeal of the "Community of West Azerbaijan", the State Committee for Prisoners, Missing Persons and Hostages, the investigation department of the Prosecutor General's Office launched an investigation.

Based on the documents of the State Archive of Azerbaijan, the facts of crimes against humanity committed since the early 20th century by Armenian armed formations against ethnic Azerbaijanis in West Azerbaijan have been investigated.

Till March, 1918 198 Azerbaijani villages, including 32 in Irevan province, 84 - in Echmiadzin province, 7 - in Novo-Bayazid province, 75 - in Surmalinsk province were destroyed.

Genocide and forcible deportation of 135.000 Azerbaijanis were carried out in these regions.

About 150.000 Azerbaijanis were forcibly deported from their native lands in 1949-1953.

In 1988-1992, 250.000 Azerbaijanis were expelled from 185 settlements in Armenia. At the same time, 216 Azerbaijanis were killed with particular cruelty by Armenian armed formations.

Taking into consideration the signs of crimes as set forth by the national and international legislation, the criminal case under Articles 103 (genocide), 107 (deportation or forcible transfer of population), 109 (persecution), 120.2.4 (murder with particular cruelty), 120.2.7 (murder of two or more persons) of the Criminal Code was initiated. The investigation department of the Procurator-General is in charge of the investigation.

During the pre-trial investigation, it is planned to submit applications to the pro-curatorial authorities of foreign countries, and also to cooperate with international organizations.

Note that this criminal case extends the legal basis for claims of the rights of Azerbaijanis exiled from present-day Armenia and their descendants to return to their native lands. -03В06-
