Radio Liberty condemns harassment of H. Ismayilova
After the appearance on the Internet, of the illegally taken intimate shots of the journalist Khadija Ismayilova, Radio Liberty-Free Europe called on the government of Azerbaijan to investigate the facts of blackmail and intimidation of journalists.
The statement also condemned a Web-fabricated interview of Ismayilova’s friend, blogger Emin Milli.
In March 2012 Ismayilova’s intimate footage, shot with a hidden camera was also posted on the Internet.
Despite promises by the government to conduct an investigation, it did not happen.
The campaign launched against Ismayilova is regarded as moral terror. Moreover, last week Ismayilova received death threats.
Investigative journalism by Ismayilova revealed the multi-million dollar illegal business of the family of President Ilham Aliyev.
The Acting Director of Radio Liberty-Free Europe Kevin Klose appreciates the reports and fearlessness of Ismayilova and was outraged by the campaign of blackmail.
"We urge the government of Azerbaijan to make an accurate and comprehensive investigation into the attacks on Khadija and condemn the act, which creates risks for journalists.
We want the government to express support for journalists who perform essential work for the public and to comply with the obligation to protect them," said Klose.
The statement also reiterated the interventions in the broadcasting of TV programs of Radio Liberty from Turkey, starting from May 28.
In this regard, the government of Azerbaijan was sent an appeal to identify the sources of this intervention, which has not yet been done. -03D06 -
