Report on political prisoners is a clear signal to the Azerbaijani authorities - Sunna Evarsdottir
Strasbourg / 30.01.20 / Turan: The adoption by the PACE session of a resolution on political prisoners in Azerbaijan is a clear signal to official Baku to stop political arrests, release political prisoners and comply with its obligations to the Council of Europe. The author of the report, the deputy from Iceland, Thorhildur Sunna ÆVARSDÓTTIR, told Turan.
“PACE clearly and unequivocally stated that it does not consider the presence of political prisoners in a member country of the organization acceptable,” she said.
Among other things, Baku must comply with the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights, which it has been ignoring for a long time, the speaker added.
“Next, we will monitor the actions of the Azerbaijani authorities and I will report to PACE on the actions of the authorities,” she said, adding that she could visit Baku during the upcoming parliamentary elections.
The speaker rejected Baku’s criticism of bias and a negative attitude towards Azerbaijan. All that is reflected in the report is real facts that are not difficult to verify. -16B-
