Mr. Anar Mammadov, Founder of the Azerbaijan America Alliance and the son of the Transport Minister of Azerbaijan, Ziya Mammadov, and other dignitaries, including US Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell, were in attendance at Tuesday’s groundbreaking for the new 6,800-foot visitor’s center at the Flight 93 National Memorial, which will also feature a new learning center and a symbolic Tower of Voices with 40 wind chimes, each representing a person lost in the crash of United Airlines Flight 93. Secretary Jewell spoke at groundbreaking ceremony and helped, along with Mr. Mammadov, to outline the future visitor center's location by driving in surveyors’ stakes.
"I am pleased today that I can give a special thanks to Mr. Mammadov, who is the founder of the Azerbaijan America Alliance," said King Laughlin, Flight 93 Campaign Manager. "Mr. Mammadov and the Alliance have given tremendous support to this project and to its construction, and we extend our sincere thanks and gratitude to him and the nation of Azerbaijan for that. It shows us that this story is not one just about Pennsylvania and not just about America, but it's really a worldwide story for anyone who is touched by the story of Flight 93 and who cares about freedom and liberty and that this place will always stand for that."
“Azerbaijan has strongly supported the U.S. in the war on terror, and I believe that Azerbaijan’s involvement in the completion of the Flight 93 Memorial will strengthen mutual understanding and respect between the people of Azerbaijan and America,” said Mr. Mammadov, Founder of the Azerbaijan America Alliance.
The $60 million project, which is administered by the National Park Service, is being built with the aid of more than $40 million in private funds. That fundraising goal was reached earlier this week by the National Park Foundation, the official charity of the national parks. The donations have already made possible the construction of the Memorial’s central plaza, a Wall of Names, 40 Memorial Groves, a Field of Honor, and major reforestation of the landscape in rural western Pennsylvania at the site of the crash.
Design work on a 93-foot-tall Tower of Voices will begin later this year, according to Jeff Reinbold, Superintendent of the Flight 93 National Memorial. The Memorial, on which construction began in 2010, is expected to be completed in 2015.
How much Anar Mammadov contributed was not reported. The project should be completed in 2015.
Recall that Flight 93 was one of four planes hijacked by terrorists in the U.S.A. on Sept. 11, 2001. The terrorists tried to send it to the White House, but the passengers began to battle with them and the plane crashed in Pennsylvania. -25D-

The next municipal elections in Azerbaijan will take place on January 29, 2025, Mazahir Panahov, the head of the Central Election Commission (CEC), said at a meeting of the commission.
