State Dept: Need Of Unified Georgia 'Has Never Been More Urgent'
Washington D.C./06.09.23/Turan: The United States on Tuesday reacted to Georgia's pro-Russian ruling party's attempts to impeach the country's president over her visits to the European Union, TURAN's Washington correspondent reports.
"The need for a unified Georgia has never been more urgent," State Department's Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel told a daily briefing.
"We’ve been clear on what we’ve been seeing, which is that the Georgian people have been clear that they see their future with Europe and the European Union, and have given Georgia a clear roadmap to achieve a candidate status," Patel said when responding to TURAN's questions.
He added: "And we urge the Georgian Government and all stakeholders to come together now and work towards that objective, especially to implement the reforms required to achieve EU candidate status"
The Georgian Dream party, which is increasingly at odds with President Salome Zourabichvili, last week launched a campaign to impeach her, even though the effort appears unlikely to succeed.
