On Friday September, 5th, representatives of the Prosecutor’s Office came unannounced to the IREX office in Baku.
They brought an order issued by the Court of Yasamal, and took away all computers, and other equipment as well as all documents.
IREX has since lodged a legal appeal, and hopes the equipment and
documents will be returned as soon as possible, to allow the
completion of the current USAID-funded project, which is scheduled to end Sept 30th 2014.
The IREX bank account in Azerbaijan was frozen on July 26, 2014, due to a ‘criminal investigation’ launched against several local and
international NGOs. IREX looks forward to a fair and speedy
completion of this investigation.
IREX is concerned by these actions, which prevent it from continuing
fifteen years of successful support for the development of education, media and civil society, as a guest of Azerbaijan.
