The bank accounts of the American organization IREX arrested
On July 31, were arrested on the bank accounts of the American NGO IREX representation in Azerbaijan. The decision was taken by the Nasimi District Court of Baku on the claim of the General Prosecutor Office, Turan was learned from sources in the international organizations. According to the same source, IREX appealed the court's decision. IREX does not make comments yet.
This organization is one of the major donors of Azerbaijani media. For several years IREX implemented dozens of projects to provide material and technical assistance to the media, organized numerous workshops and seminars for journalists. IREX played a big role in Internet access to rural areas of the country, organizing free internet room in dozens of villages in the country.
In May the investigation department of the Serious Crimes Prosecutor General launched a criminal case against a number of local and foreign NGOs. Since then were arrested about 20 accounts of local and foreign NGOs. In some of these NGOs are conducted tax audits.
Law enforcement agencies do not comment on the reasons for the investigation. Local activists see this as pressure from the authorities to eliminate independent civil society institutions. Apparently, the authorities have started a course on overall eviction from the country western NGOs and donors supporting civil society and independent media. —06D-
