The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) launches release campaign for imprisoned journalists due to coronavirus
Baku/30.03.20/Turan: The Committee to Protect Journalists launched the #FreeThePress campaign on March 30 to ensure the unconditional release of all imprisoned journalists to ensure their safety during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Over the past four years, the CPJ's annual census has shown a record number of journalists in prison due to their work - at least 250. These journalists are now facing a death sentence. The World Health Organization has stated that prisoners are particularly vulnerable to the virus, since self-isolation in a prison is not possible and prisoners are usually denied medical attention.
CPJ also published a petition and an open letter to world leaders demanding the immediate release of imprisoned journalists. The campaign will include video messages from previously imprisoned journalists. The culmination of the campaign will be World Press Freedom Day on May 3, 2020.
