Baku/12.07.23/TURAN: The EU strongly supports the activities of the ICRC as the only major humanitarian organisation present in the South Caucasus. It is providing crucial humanitarian assistance and protection to those in need, in accordance with the humanitarian principles of neutrality, independence and impartiality.
Their work along the Lachin corridor has been exclusively focused on providing the essential needs for the Armenian population in Karabakh and much needed humanitarian assistance. It is the responsibility of the Azerbaijani authorities to ensure that ICRC can continue its operations and prevent a potential humanitarian crisis.
The EU strongly supports the crucial role of the ICRC in the region, and reiterates its call for Azerbaijan to ensure the unrestricted movement of people and goods via the Lachin corridor.
The EU statement, however, does not express an assessment of the use of Red Cross symbols for smuggling along the Lachin road.
Due to the identification of such facts and the need for investigative actions, Azerbaijan has temporarily suspended the passage through the Lachin border checkpoint, including Red Cross vehicles, since yesterday. ---16B---

Ramil Eynaliev, an activist from the Lankaran branch of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PPFA), has been administratively arrested for 30 days on charges of "disobeying the police." According to the PPFA, Eynaliev was detained the day before and taken to the third police station of the Khazar district in Baku. On January 16, the State Committee for Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons of Azerbaijan reported that 32 families, totaling 153 people, returned to Jabrayil. A total of 1,487 people (358 families) have now returned to the Jabrayil region. The day before, 6 families (25 people) returned to the city of Khodjaly, 18 families (92 people) to the village of Ballidja, and 2 families (8 people) to Shusha. In total, 10,675 people have returned to the liberated territories to date.
