The opposition leader went on a hunger strike in prison due to the deprivation of his family of social assistance
Baku / 12.07.23 / Turan: Jailed activist of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) Agyl Humbatov went on a hunger strike on July 12. He protests against the deprivation of his family of targeted social assistance.
This was reported to Turan by the wife of the oppositionist Aygun Gumbatova. According to her, Gumbatov wrote an official statement to the leadership of colony number 2 on a hunger strike, after which he was put in a punishment cell.
She noted that the payment of social assistance to the family was terminated from May 1.
“The Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Population told me that the previously paid assistance in the amount of 272 manats was not correctly calculated, and since I have three young children, we should be given more than 450 manats. For this reason, they took an application for waiver of 272 manats from me. Now neither this amount nor the promised 450 manats is given,” the wife of the oppositionist said.
According to her, for the past two months the family has been deprived of their livelihood and is supported only by material assistance from “kind people”.
The Penitentiary Service could not be reached for comment.
Agyl Gumbatov was detained on August 11, 2021 in the village of Zira and subsequently charged with stabbing local resident Yamen Mammadov.
In November 2021, the Baku Grave Crimes Court sentenced him to 10 goals in prison.
Humbatov is recognized by human rights activists as a political prisoner.
In the year before his arrest in connection with criticism of the authorities, he was twice placed in a psychiatric hospital.—03B06-
