The parliament of Armenia elected the president of the country
Baku/03.03.22/Turan: On Thursday, the Armenian parliament elected Vahagn Khachatryan as president of the republic. The voting took place in two rounds, as in the first round 69 deputies voted for Khachaturian, instead of the required 81. The opposition did not participate in the voting. In the second round, 71 deputies voted for Khachaturian - the entire composition of the parliamentary faction of the ruling Civil Contract party.
Speaking to the deputies, Khachaturian said that he was in favor of reconciliation with neighbors and the development of regional cooperation. In an interview with Armenian public TV on February 3, Vahagn Khachaturian stated that Armenia should live in peace with Azerbaijan and Turkey. Khachatryan has no idea how you can fight, argue with your neighbors. “I believe that one can live with neighbors only in peaceful conditions,” he said. He called the opposition's thesis that Armenia is "forced to peace" obsolete.
“The citizens of Armenia must understand that peace is the only option for life and development. Even if we are very strong, we must strive for peace, be guided by this in our relations with others,” Khachaturian noted.
As for the Armenian-Turkish process, he treats it very positively. “It needs to be continued, as a result, the process will lead to economic and political relations,” Khachatryan said.
A 63-year-old Khachatryan in 1992-1996 - was the mayor of Yerevan, an adviser to the President of Armenia Levon Ter-Petrosyan. 1996-1999 was a member of parliament.
Vahagn Khachaturian was a participant in international initiatives for the peaceful settlement of conflicts in the South Caucasus. He is one of the co-authors of the Potsdam Declaration, which was signed on October 7, 2020 by the liberal democratic parties of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia.
The document linked the future of the South Caucasus and the peaceful settlement of conflicts directly with entry into the European space through integration processes and the establishment of universal values in the region. -0-

The United States and the European Union, which tried to position themselves as mediators in the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict, have come up with nothing and merely copied Russia's ideas, distorting their essence in order to "hijack" the peace process for themselves. However, their true goal was to take control of the region, to insert themselves into it, and to push out Russia, as well as Iran and Türkiye, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated at a briefing on November 13.
