The Prosecutor General of Azerbaijan and Iran discussed the case of Farid Safarli
Baku/14.09.23/Turan: The Attorneys General of Azerbaijan and Iran, Kamran Aliyev and Mohammad Kazem Movahedi-Azadi, met in Baku on September 14 to discuss various aspects of bilateral cooperation and address the investigation into the armed attack on the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran.
The press service of the Prosecutor General's Office reported that Kamran Aliyev emphasized the significance of the statement aimed at bringing the perpetrator of the terrorist attack against the Azerbaijani embassy to justice. This incident was a focal point of their discussions.
In response, Mohammad Kazem Movahedi-Azadi underscored the high importance Iran places on its collaboration with Azerbaijan, marking his first foreign visit as Attorney General to Baku.
The meeting delved into a range of legal cooperation topics between the two nations, encompassing matters such as the extradition of convicts, the joint effort to combat drug trafficking, environmental violations, and other pertinent subjects.
Additionally, the participants engaged in a dialogue regarding their collaborative efforts on international platforms, with particular emphasis on the Organization for Economic Cooperation.
The meeting also touched upon the case of Azerbaijani citizen Farid Safarli, who had been convicted in Iran. Farid Safarli, currently pursuing higher education in Germany, went missing in Iran in March of the present year while visiting a friend. Iranian authorities subsequently confirmed his detention on charges of espionage, which were later revised to "intent to espionage." In August, Safarli was sentenced to a two-year prison term, a development that has been met with denial of the charges by his mother, Dilara Askerova.
The Iranian Prosecutor General's visit to Baku coincides with his participation in the 4th meeting of the Prosecutors General of the Organization for Economic Cooperation member countries.
