The UN Committee on Migrant Workers called on Azerbaijan
Geneva/15.10.21/Turan: At its latest session, the UN Committee on Migrant Workers (CMW) issued recommendations to the Azerbaijani authorities. They deal with the observance of the International Convention on the Protection of Rights of Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families. This was stated in the Committee's press release of October 14.
In particular, the CMW recommended Azerbaijan to adhere to a human rights approach to migration, including the decriminalization of illegal border crossing.
The Committee expressed concern over the practice of administrative detention of immigrants and urged Azerbaijan to stop detaining children and other vulnerable groups of migrant workers as well as as asylum seekers and refugees. It recommended to use alternative measures instead of detention.
Also, the CMW called for effective investigation and prosecution of human trafficking cases. -02D-
