Baku/16.03.23/Turan: Brigadier General Edward Vaughan, Deputy Director for Partnership, Security and Political Opportunities of the US European Command, met with the head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations Kamaleddin Heydarov on the eve of his visit to Azerbaijan. 

According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, during the meeting, Heydarov thanked the US Department of Defense for the equipment provided and the training of the civil defense troops of the Ministry of Emergency Situations.

He stressed the importance of prospects for future bilateral cooperation in priority areas.

Touching upon the issue of nuclear safety, Heydarov said that the morally and physically obsolete Metsamor nuclear power plant in Armenia poses a great threat to the entire region, the Ministry of Emergency Situations said.

Brigadier General Vaughan stressed that the development of emergency response relations between the relevant departments of the two countries is mutually beneficial. In this context, he spoke about the prospects for expanding cooperation between the US Defense Threat Reduction Agency and the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Azerbaijan.

In addition, the United States is interested in expanding cooperation between relevant agencies to combat oil spills at sea.

Today, Vaughan visited the Coast Guard Department of the State Border Service of Azerbaijan, where he got acquainted with the use of equipment provided by the United States to protect infrastructure in the Caspian Sea and prevent drug trafficking.

In turn, the US Embassy in Azerbaijan reported that Brigadier General Vaughan took part in the ceremony of handing over service equipment to the Government of Azerbaijan on March 15.

"The total cost of this equipment, as well as materials for emergency response and related training, is 4 million US dollars. The equipment will help those working in the field of emergencies to reduce the consequences of emergencies," the diplomatic mission said in a statement. ---03B06---
