The Wall Street Journal: the need for greater American involvement has become apparent, as Russia and Iran are likely to exploit the Armenians of Karabakh to spoil the peace process
Baku/02.05.23/Turan: In an effort to broker a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Secretary of State Antony Blinken is hosting talks this week between the two countries' foreign ministers in Washington. This marks a significant expansion of Washington's role as a peace mediator, with Mr. Blinken preparing for several days of hands-on American mediation, The Wall Street Journal commented on the Secretary of State's mediation.
The commentary notes that the need for greater American involvement has become apparent, as Russia and Iran are likely to exploit the Armenians of Karabakh to spoil the peace process. Mr. Blinken previous efforts in November 2020, which involved little more than encouraging direct engagement between the parties, were not enough. As talks resume, Mr. Blinken must press Yerevan to make peace with Azerbaijan and prevent Putin from exploiting the situation to his advantage.
