There are 140 political prisoners in Azerbaijan - list of UFPPA
Baku/06.11.19/Turan: The Union for "Freedom of Political Prisoners of Azerbaijan" (UFPPA) today released an updated list of persons convicted of political reasons. There are 140 names on the list. They are classified into eight groups. The group of "journalists and bloggers" - 5 people, including Araz Guliyev, Elchin Ismayilli, Zia Asadli, Ikram Rahimov and Polad Aslanov. Afgan Mukhtarly dropped out of this group, whom the authorities released on the eve of the spring holiday of Novruz.
In the list of "members of opposition parties and movements" - seven people. In this group, Tofig Yagublu, a member of the Musavat party and the National Council of Democratic Forces, who was arrested on March 22 on trumped-up charges of hooliganism, became a new political prisoner.
In the category of “victims of crimes in the MNS”, three people are convicts in the case of “Sayid Dadashbeyli Group”.
Emin Sagiev, arrested due to the opposition of journalistic activities of her sister’s husband, Turkel Azertürk, who lives in migration in Europe, is in the category “Political hostages”.
The largest number of names is in the Believers group - 54.
In the group on convicts in the "Ganja case" - 48 people.
In the group of “life-long prisoners”, there remain 14 people.
The new group on the list were convicts in the Terter case. There are eight of them. In fact, the number of convicted in this case is greater. However, the authors of the list have complete information about eight persons.
On May 7, 2017, the Prosecutor General’s Office, the State Security Service, the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country issued a joint statement exposing a group of military and civilians working for Armenians in the Terter region. In fact, a lawsuit was filed under the Article 274 of the Criminal Code (treason). Human rights activists believe that these cases were investigated by gross violation of the rights of the accused, using sophisticated torture against them, because of which seven people were tortured to death.
The previous UPPA list was published at the beginning of November 2019. There were 135 names in it.

According to the Turkish newspaper Sabah, officials from the Istanbul Prosecutor's Office's Anti-Smuggling Unit have detained an Azerbaijani citizen with a large shipment of gold. The detention took place near the Vadi İstanbul shopping center in the Sarıyer district, where a taxi was stopped. During the search, 70 kg of gold was found. The Azerbaijani citizen in the vehicle claimed ownership of the cargo and also stated that he was a diplomat. The investigation by the prosecutor's office is ongoing, reports Sabah newspaper. The media outlet does not disclose the name of the "diplomat," only his initials – M.G.Ş. The Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs has declined to comment on the situation.
