Three Azerbaijani Citizens Released from Libyan Prison

Baku / 02.09.17 / Turan: Three Azerbaijani citizens arrested in Libya have been released from prison and their return to their homeland has been ensured. This was stated by the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry on the morning of September 2.

According to the same source, the release of Namig Yusif Oglu Salmanov, Movlud Firudin Oglu Rashidbeyli and Farid Huseyn Oglu Aliyev became possible on August 31 after the talks between the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry and the relevant structures of Libya.

They were members of the crew of the Turkish ship Kalkanlar 1 and were wanted since February 27, 2016 as missing. The last time in a telephone conversation with their families, the Azerbaijani citizens managed to report that their ship was sunk, without specifying details.

After the search by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs it was established that the citizens were taken hostage by the "Islamic forces" in the Libyan city of Sirte. In connection with the suspension of the activities of the Azerbaijani embassy in Libya, the Azerbaijani side applied for consular support to the Turkish diplomatic mission. At the same time, contacts continued with the Libyan embassy in Baku to liberate the Azerbaijani citizens.

As a result of the measures taken, it was possible to ensure the release of the hostages and their delivery to the territory controlled by the Government of Libya. However, they were charged with illegal export of diesel fuel from the country and in this way causing major damage to the Libyan budget.

Representatives of the Turkish diplomatic mission visited the arrested in the detention center, and they were provided with the opportunity to have telephone conversations with their families. Through the embassy of Libya in Baku, the indictment was requested and consular assistance was rendered.

As a result of negotiations between the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry and relevant bodies of Libya, the criminal prosecution of the Azerbaijani citizens was stopped and they were released. On September 2, the released were taken to Istanbul and sent to Baku by air.

The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry expressed gratitude for the support rendered by the Turkish Foreign Ministry and the diplomatic missions of this country in Libya and Baku. -06D--
