US and Israeli Ambassadors visited Krasnaya Sloboda
Baku/01.10.21/Turan: On September 30, the US and Israeli Ambassadors to Azerbaijan, Lee Litzenberger and George Dick, visited the village of Krasnaya Sloboda in the Guba region where mountain Jews reside compactly.
According to the US Embassy in Baku, a director of the local museum, Igor Shaulov arranged a tour for the Ambassadors during which he familiarized them with the history and culture of the mountain Jews. At the same time, issues of protecting cultural heritage and developing tourism with the participation of the United States and Israel were discussed.
In turn, the Israeli Embassy reported that the Ambassadors of the United States and Israel visited the largest settlement of Jews in the Islamic world. With the support of USAID, one building in the village will be renovated to get used as a center of cultural heritage of Jews.
It should be noted that the village of Krasnaya Sloboda is located 170 km north of Baku. Its population is mountain Jews. The settlement is an administrative unit of the self-government of the town of Guba.
Also, Krasnaya Sloboda is the only place of compact residence of mountain Jews on the entire post-Soviet space. At present, approx. 5.000 people live there,-16D-

On November 26, the Baku Court of Appeals reviewed the appeal of human rights defender Anar Mammadli, who contested the extension of his detention. Mammadli's lawyer, Javad Javadov, stated that Mammadli argued the extension of his pre-trial detention was unfounded and linked the criminal prosecution to his human rights activities, Turan reported.

Arrested economist Fazil Gasimov has reportedly faced pressure after protesting the interruption of a phone call with his family on November 16. "The phone call was cut off, and Fazil demanded that the connection be restored.
