US Azerbaijanis set up a charity fund to help families of martyrs
New York/26.05.21 Turan: The United Charities for Azerbaijan (UCA) Foundation which was established on the initiative of a group of Azerbaijanis living in Washington and adjacent districts has launched its activities in the United States. The organization, whose name is translated as "Charitable Association for Azerbaijan", has been created to provide assistance to the families of the martyrs of the Second Karabakh War, as well as victims among the civilian population and ghazis (participants in the hostilities).
"The organization is not engaged in any political activity, either in the United States or Azerbaijan," its press release says.
The Foundation is responsible for consolidation of the Azerbaijani community around common humanitarian goals.
The first meeting of the foundation's initiative group was held on December 5, 2020 in the state of Virginia.
Every member of the community, as well as any US citizen, regardless of political beliefs, religion, nationality and race, can become a member of the UCA, run for its governing bodies elected annually at the general meeting of all members of the organization. The foundation is funded through voluntary donations from citizens and various organizations. Donations for political purposes are not accepted.
UCA maintains contacts in order to coordinate with representatives of Azerbaijani communities in various states. The organization builds its work on the basis of specific projects for which it raises funds.
"Activities, projects, programs, bank account of UCA are transparent, and open to any public scrutiny," the statement continues.
The fund's activities will be monitored annually by an audit company. Information about the Foundation's activities, projects, programs, and governing bodies can be tracked on the Foundation's website and Facebook page.
Entrepreneur Gunduz Tahirli was elected President of the foundation. The board also includes economist Farid Talishli; doctoral student in politics and management at George Washington University Sevinj Mammadova; president of the non-profit organization "Azerbaijani Women of America" Lala Rahimova; lawyer in the field of US immigration law Ainur Jafar and entrepreneur Mahir Iskender.

On January 13, the trial in the case of public activist Nijat Ibrahim continued in the Baku Serious Crimes Court under the chairmanship of Judge Aygun Gurbanova. The International Committee of Concerned Scholars (ICS) has appealed to the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, requesting his assistance in securing the release of the arrested researcher, Igbal Abilov. The ICS expressed concern that Abilov's arrest "may be related to his research on ethnic minorities in Azerbaijan, conducted in collaboration with scholars from Armenia."
