Baku/19.11.19/Turan: Azerbaijan’s human rights obligations to international organizations were discussed on Tuesday at a meeting of the leader of the Republican Alternative party Ilgar Mammadov with senior political adviser to the Helsinki Commission of the US Congress Everett Price. Mammadov wrote about this in his microblog on Twitter.
In particular, the upcoming parliamentary elections in 2020 were discussed in the context of the country's commitments in the framework of the OSCE and the Council of Europe.
At the same time, special emphasis was placed on the issues of registering candidates and ensuring freedom of assembly during the election campaign.
Prior to this, the leader of the Popular Front Party Ali Karimli and the chairman of the Musavat party Arif Hajili met with Price. Karimli wrote on his facebook page, representatives of the State Department and the US Embassy accompanying Price attended the meeting.
“We discussed the socio-political situation in the country, including police violence during a rally on October 19 and the subsequent period, an illegal ban on freedom of assembly. The actions of the authorities can lead the country to chaos and the world community should not calmly contemplate this and introduce targeted sanctions against officials sanctioning police violence and torture,” he said.
On Tuesday, Price also held a meeting with representatives of civil society and the media of Azerbaijan, during which he discussed the state of human freedom and media freedom. — 06D-
