Vugar Safarli arrested for embezzlement of almost 6 million manats
Baku/14.01.21/Turan: On January 14, the former executive director of the State Fund for Media Development Support Vugar Safarli was arrested by the court decision. He was charged under several Articles of the Criminal Code. This sensational news reported on Thursday the press service of the Prosecutor General's Office of Azerbaijan.
According to the same source, Safarli is accused of embezzling significant funds. In particular, large-scale thefts, falsification of documents and abuse were committed during the implementation of the project to build two houses for journalists in Baku.
Safarli headed the State Fund for Media Development Support in 2009-2020.
During these years, he rented the premises of the Foundation at an inflated price in the International Press Center, which belonged to the former assistant to the head of state, Ali Hasanov. The damage to the state amounted to more than 800 thousand manats.
The prosecutor's office reported on the misappropriation of 300 thousand manats by Safarli by transferring these funds to the account of the Football-Gol newspaper owned by his relative, as well as embezzling more than 200 thousand manats when purchasing stationery and holding ceremonies.
In 2015-2018 in a criminal conspiracy with other persons, Safarli placed the stolen 5 million 796 thousand manats to accounts in one of the commercial banks.
He was charged under several Articles of the Criminal Code: 179.4 (embezzlement on an especially large scale), 193-1.3.2 (legalization of especially large funds obtained by illegal means), 308.2 (abuse of office, which led to serious consequences), 313 (official forgery) ... Under these articles, he faces up to 14 years in prison. His companion Nadir Mammadov was also arrested on charges of complicity in these crimes. The investigation is investigating the involvement of other persons in these crimes, the report says.
Safarli was Ali Hasanov's henchman and closest person and numerous crimes and thefts would hardly have been possible without Ali Hasanov's patronage.
Vugar Safarli was dismissed from his post in April 2020, and Ali Hasanov in November 2019. -02D-
