What does Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov bring to Baku?
Baku/27.02.23/Turan: On Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov arrives in Baku on a two-day official visit. No program and purpose of the visit are reported in Moscow and Baku.
Lavrov is expected to hold talks with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Baramov and President Ilham Aliyev.
In recent weeks, Baku and Moscow have maintained intensive contacts at the diplomatic level. The main topic was the situation around the Armenian-Azerbaijani settlement and the deployment of European observers in Armenia.
It can be said without exaggeration that the EU mission on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan is becoming increasingly important for Moscow, which has openly and repeatedly expressed its dissatisfaction with Yerevan's decision to invite the Europeans and ensure their presence in Russia's zone of interests.
Judging by everything, during Lavrov's visit these issues will be in the center of attention, and a joint attitude may be developed. Baku also does not hide its negative attitude towards the EU mission, regarding this as Yerevan's desire to delay the signing of the peace agreement, justifying it by the "occupation" of its border territory.
There was no doubt that the situation on the Lachin road and a possible way out of this situation would also be discussed.
Yerevan's refusal to take into account Moscow's dissatisfaction with the presence of the EU mission in Armenia could speed up the issue of installing an Azerbaijani checkpoint in Lachin, on the border between Azerbaijan and Armenia. It is possible that during the visit Lavrov will discuss the role and powers of the Russian peacekeepers in Lachin, taking into account the appearance of such a checkpoint. -02B-
