When Will Aliyev-Pashinyan special Meeting Take Place?

Baku / 17.02.20 / Turan: The Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan are negotiating a possible meeting of the heads of two countries - Ilham Aliyev and Nikol Pashinyan. The parties not only discuss where and when such a meeting can take place, but also about what and around what the negotiations will be held. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated this in an interview with Deutsche Welle radio.

Commenting on previous meetings with Aliyev, Pashinyan said that in reality these were not negotiations. “We just meet and talk, exchange opinions about the processes, about the history of negotiations, and we did not hope that there would be any concrete changes in the framework of these meetings,” he said.

“At present, our Foreign Ministers are working on preparing our possible meeting so that such a meeting becomes more understandable for the parties: how we will discuss and what we will discuss. It is impossible to resolve this conflict without solving some very specific issues,” Pashinyan continued and made it clear that he could not negotiate on behalf of Karabakh.

“This is the conflict of Nagorno-Karabakh, and who will represent it in the negotiations? The residents of Karabakh did not give me a mandate to represent them in the negotiations,” he said.

Note that this interview was given before the meeting with Ilham Aliyev at the Munich Security Conference. It is also important to note that in Munich before the public discussion between Aliyev and Pashinyan, a short one-on-one meeting took place. Considering that the discussion was extremely acute and resulted in a public dispute between the two leaders, it can be assumed that the parties did not come to a common denominator and could not find common ground for organizing their special meeting. -02B-
