Will New Agreement Be Signed between Azerbaijan and EU in 2019?
Baku / 25.12.18 / Turan: Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov declined to directly answer the question of whether it is possible to sign an agreement on a comprehensive partnership between Baku and the European Union in 2019.
"Azerbaijan wants to develop equal and mutually beneficial partnership with the European Union. The last year of our partnership was very productive in terms of advancing the agenda for cooperation with the EU," Mammadyarov said in an interview with a number of media.
At the same time, he stressed that on July 11, in Brussels, with the participation of President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and President of the Council of the European Union Donald Tusk, the initialing of a document on the priorities of partnership between Azerbaijan and the EU took place.
This document was finalized on October 15 in the framework of the Eastern Partnership Ministers' meeting in Luxembourg. "
The Minister noted that negotiations on a new comprehensive agreement between the EU and Azerbaijan, which will open the "important stage" in bilateral cooperation, are continuing.
"The negotiation process is still ongoing. Naturally, this requires some time, because both us and our EU partners need a serious, high-quality agreement. This agreement will lay the legal foundations of bilateral relations and strengthen the mutual partnership between Azerbaijan and the EU in various areas for a long time. We believe it will be a strategic document based on equal partnership and common interests. Moreover, this agreement is necessary not only for us, but also for the EU member states," said Mammadyarov.
Recall that the start of negotiations on a new comprehensive agreement between the EU and Azerbaijan was given back in February 2017.
Note that if, until May 2019, the negotiations are not completed, then the signing of the agreement cannot be expected next year, because in the next period elections to the European Parliament will take place, and then the process of forming a new European Commission will begin. -06D--
