Z. Alizadeh: With Mr. Rouhani important changes could happen in the Azerbaijani-Iranian relations

Iran has a defined democracy under the Islamic ideology. The mechanism of democracy works for the 11th time. In this way the orientalist Zardush Alizadeh in an interview with Turan commented on results of the presidential elections in Iran. In his opinion, the public in Iran is waiting for more moderate policy after the elections and is looking for serious compromise with the West. "Iran is developing a nuclear program and argues that it is designed for peaceful purposes. The West doubts it. Hasan Rouhani said, to dispel these doubts there would be an opportunity for greater transparency," said the expert.

Alizadeh said that the Liberals replaced the Conservatives in Iran, just as in America, the Republicans were changed by the Democrats. "Hasan Rouhani hopes to be able to create the conditions for some easing. It seems that the Iranian people are tired of the radical Conservatives and their harsh statements and found a moderate leader," said Alizadeh.

Iran said it will ensure transparency in the nuclear program. If it can convince the West, the tougher sanctions could be lifted. "The sanctions, severely affecting the Iranian economy, forced the government to act more flexibly and efficiently," said the orientalist.

However, in his opinion, the elections will not bring major new features and changes to other nations living in Iran. "The rights of Azerbaijanis living in Iran are not violated less or more than those of other nationalities living in this country. Just the Azerbaijanis link these restrictions to the national factor. The rights of all citizens are limited to Islamic laws. If Rouhani pursues moderate policies, it is possible that due to national rights, the government will make some concessions," said Alizadeh.

According to the expert, in the Azerbaijani-Iranian relations there could be important changes. "This relationship is developed within a certain framework. In the relationship there are certain objective and psychological contradictions. They come from history. To improve relations both sides should come not from the interests of certain circles, but from the national interest," said Alizadeh.

According to him, in recent times, both in Iran and Azerbaijan harsh statements have been sounded. "It is not in the interests of the peoples. In many cases, Azerbaijan was used as an arena for international action against Iran. This is abnormal and should be prevented, because it does not meet the interests of the people," said the analyst.

At the same time, he said, the relations between Azerbaijan and Israel, the U.S. or Russia do not apply to Iran. "We are not twins, to love and hate someone together. Among the friends of Iran, there are countries that Azerbaijan, to put it mildly, does not like, and vice versa," said Alizadeh. -03B04-
