A large fire in the Shirvan Park threatens gazelles

A big fire began on June 27 in Shirvan National Park (about 100 km south of Baku), located along the Alat-Astara highway. According to Emil Mammadov, the head of the public association "Promoting Democracy", the fire began in the dry grass, and quickly covered an area of over 100 hectares.

According to the press service of the Ministry of Environment, the fire broke out immediately after a fuel truck of  the company "Salyan Oil" drove there. However, the site chief of the company, Balakishi Bagirov, denied the report. According to him,
just the  drivers of the truck reported  about the fire.

Currently fire continues. Approximately ten fire engines came to the scene.

The Shirvan Park is home to the largest herd of gazelles in the South Caucasus. By some estimates, their number reaches here from   5,000 to 8,000. -16B04-
