Laçın Vəliyev
Activist arrested after refusing to testify against PPFA leadership
Baku/05.04.21/uran: A former member of the Musavat party, and now a supporter of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), Lachin Veliyev was detained on March 20 in the Sabunchi region. By a court decision, he was arrested on charges of drug trafficking on a large scale (Article 234.4.3 of the Criminal Code), said lawyer Neimat Karimli. If he is found guilty, he faces from five to 12 years in prison.
“I met with him in the Baku pre-trial detention center-1. He said that he had been detained more than once before and each time he was required to testify against the leaders of the Popular Front Party.
He refused, and in the end, he was accused of drugs. Veliyev does not admit his guilt and said that he gave testimony under pressure,” Karimli said and noted that his client had filed a complaint with the Sabunchu district prosecutor's office. Officials have not yet commented on Veliyev's arrest.
Lachin Veliyev has been detained several times in recent months and subjected to physical pressure. They demanded that he testify against a member of the PFPA presidium Bakhtiyar Imanov, the PFPA said.
A number of human rights organizations condemned the arrest of Veliyev. Thus, the "Line of Defense" organization reports that Veliyev was blackmailed with video material concerning the family.
“When he was shown video footage of his intimate life with his wife, he passed out. Later he said that he was ready to sign any confession (so that the video would not be made public),” Rufat Safarov, executive director of the “Line of Defense” wrote on his Facebook page.--0--
