Azerbaijan celebrates Gurban Bayram
Baku/09.07.22/Turan: The celebration of the religious holiday Gurban Bayram begins in Azerbaijan on July 9.
The holiday originates from the Koranic story, according to which the Archangel Jabrail (Gabriel) appeared to the prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) in a dream and gave him a command from Allah to sacrifice his the only son Ismail (Ishmael).
Ibrahim went to the valley of Mina to the place where Mecca now stands. His son, who knew about this, did not resist, as he was obedient to his father and Allah. However, this turned out to be a test. Allah rewarded Ibrahim for his faithfulness and allowed him to sacrifice an animal.
On the day of the holiday, Muslims visit mosques in the morning, slaughter sacrificial animals. It is customary to distribute the meat of the sacrifice to the poor and needy. Meat is also delivered to nursing homes, boarding schools and orphanages.
In Azerbaijan, festive prayers are held in the mosques of the country in the morning.
This year, on the occasion of Gurban Bayram, the government declared July 9-10 as holidays, since these days fall on days off, July 11-12 will also be days off. -0-
