Azerbaijani War Veteran Attempts Suicide Amid Treatment Dispute
Bahram Nuriyev, chairman of the Gabala branch of the public association "Young Gazis" (Young volunteers) and a participant in the Second Karabakh War, attempted suicide on Sunday, according to a statement from the association. Nuriyev reportedly shot himself with a firearm, protesting against what he claimed was untimely and inadequate medical treatment, which led to severe psychological distress.
Nuriyev was admitted to the Republican Hospital late Sunday night, where X-rays and CT scans were conducted. Medical professionals have currently deemed surgery to remove the bullet undesirable, opting instead for a reassessment of his condition in the coming days before making a decision on any potential operation. "At present, the condition of the war veteran is stable," said Ayaz Gasimov, a member of the Young Gazis Association.
Friends and supporters of Nuriyev have visited him at the hospital to offer their support.
