Baku/15.02.23/Turan: Public activist Bakhtiyar Hajiyev continues his hunger strike for the 38th day, demanding his release. On Wednesday, a lawsyer visited him, at the Medical Institution of the Penitentiary Service.
According to the lawyer, the activist's healthcondition remains serious, he weighs less than 68 kg. (At the moment of detention, he weighed 84.5 kg). Due to low blood pressure and blood sugar levels, he often gets dizzy, the lawyer continued.
The activist also complained about the conditions of detention in a cramped, unventilated room and not taken outside. “Today they promised to take him from there,” the lawyer added.
“Bakhtiyar Hajiyev still refuses medical care and, in particular, droppers with nutrients. On the other hand, he is not routinely examined at the Medical Institution of the Penitentiary Service,” his lawyer believes. He also said that Bakhtiyar Hajiyev asked Professor Adyl Geybulla to visit him.
* Bakhtiyar Hajiyev was detained on December 9 on charges of hooliganism and contempt of court. On the same day, the Khatai District Court arrested him for 1 month and 20 days.
On December 15, Hajiyev went on a hunger strike demanding his release. On December 28, he ended his hunger strike after persistent calls from the public and family members. However, on January 9, he resumed his hunger strike after the appeal court refused to release him and continues to this day.

The closure of Azerbaijan's land borders was discussed during the parliamentary session on November 25. While the government’s decision cites the coronavirus pandemic as the main reason—despite the World Health Organization declaring its end last year—Zahid Oruj, Chair of the Human Rights Committee in the Milli Majlis, pointed to other factors. He stated, "Opening the borders could result in an influx of hundreds of thousands of non-Azerbaijani refugees due to the Russia-Ukraine war. Additionally, in Iran, many are prepared to cross into Azerbaijan to safeguard their lives and assets amid military strikes. Such waves of refugees could lead to humanitarian, social, and cultural clashes that may threaten political stability."
