Court Extended Term of Prison Sentence of Giyas Ibrahimov for another Three Months
Baku / 18.12.17 / Turan: A verdict was announced in the Yasamal District Court on the case of the youth activist Giyas Ibrahimov and his father Hasan Ibrahimov.
The father and son Ibrahimov were found guilty under Article 289.2 (disrespect for the judge) of the Criminal Code. The court appointed Giyas Ibrahimov a six-month prison sentence. However, partially summarizing this period with the man"s previous punishment, the court established him a total term of 10 years 3 months of imprisonment.
Hasan Ibrahimov was sentenced to 1.5 years of correctional labor with a monthly retention of 20 percent of his earnings.
Earlier, the prosecutor asked the court to sentence both accused to 6 months of imprisonment.
Lawyer Elchin Sadigov, in a conversation with a correspondent of Turan, called the verdict "unlawful, unfair and severe." According to him, the judicial investigation was not objective, and the arguments of the defense were ignored.
The verdict will be appealed in the appellate court, the lawyer said.
This criminal case was started in connection with the incident in the Baku Court of Appeal on June 5 of this year, when Giyas Ibrahimov, during the public prosecutor's speech, tore off a microphone in a glass cage (Giyas Ibrahimov and Bayram Mammadov were sentenced to 10 years in prison on charges of drug trafficking after they wrote political slogans on the monument to Heydar Aliyev). This happened after the judge ignored Giyas"s calls that he did not hear anything.
Judicial warders entered the cage and shackled Ibrahimov in handcuffs, using brute force. The outraged father of the activist protested, urging the judge to stop the violence. "There will come a day when this will happen to your children," he exclaimed.
The judges of the Baku Appeals Court Vugar Mammadov, Aflatun Gasimov and Amir Bayramov saw this as disrespect for themselves. -03B06--
