Court of Appeal releases person involved in �Ganja case�

Baku/23.08.19/ Turan: The trail in the case of the next group of persons convicted in the Ganja case in 2018 completed today in the Baku Court of Appeal.

The appellate court commuted the sentence to the convicts. The term of Elvin Aliyev was reduced to the time he spent in custody, and he was released in the courtroom. The court reduced the term of imprisonment for the rest to 2 years.

Yaver Ismailzade, Zabil Mammadov, Ganbar Garazade, Elvin Aliyev, Isa Maharramzade, Aydin Rustamov and Alim Yusifov were sentenced to 6.5 and 9 years in prison this March on charges of organizing riots and violence against government officials.

Earlier, by the decision of the court of appeal, four more convicts on the Ganja events were released. This happened amid mass protests by parents demanding the release of their children.

* July 3, 2018 in Ganja an attempt was made on the then head of the city Elmar Veliyev. Ganja native Yunis Safarov wounded him and the bodyguard of the head of the city. After that, a protest rally in front of the Ganja administration building against Veliyev was scheduled for July 10 on social networks. On the same day, the Interior Ministry reported riots in Ganja, during which two police officers were killed. Following this, mass arrests were carried out among believers and others.

On July 31, 2019, the Prosecutor General Zakir Garalov at a meeting in this department said that in connection with the assassination attempt on E.Veliyev, 29 members of an organized criminal group were prosecuted, 11 more were put on the international wanted list.

On the events of July 10, the investigation was completed and eight lawsuits against 60 people were sent to the courts. The defendants were sentenced to various terms of imprisonment.-06D-
