Baku / 24.10.20 / Turan: The Committee to Protect Journalists called on the Azerbaijani authorities to release the editor of the xeberman.com website.

“Azerbaijan prosecutors asked a court to sentence journalist Polad Aslanov to 17 years in prison. Aslanov, chief editor of independent news sites Xeberman and Press-az, has been detained since June 2019, when he was arrested on trumped-up charges of high treason. Before his arrest, Aslanov investigated alleged corruption in the tourism sector involving high-ranking government officials,” said Gulnoza Said, CPJ's Europe and Central Asia program director.

Azerbaijan authorities should immediately release journalist Polad Aslanov, drop all charges against him, and stop their relentless campaign against independent reporters who expose state corruption and injustice, she stressed.    --06B--
